xblig.co.uk going out to pasture

After starting xblig.co.uk about 16 months ago, alas it has come time to say goodbye and put the site out to pasture.

As you have no doubt noticed, I have been less and less involved in the site of late as I started to focus more on games development. However even taking a back seat involves a small amount of work which is still more than I am able to commit.

With this in mind, once a few more reviews have been completed by Kelly and Sarah, there will be no more updates to the site. The search site will still update and remain active as this is an automated procedure, but there shall be no further reviews or otherwise site updates.

If you are a developer and have already sent in any tokens, fear not as I shall be passing these onto Master Blud (I remembered the space this time) at VVGtv. You can watch VVGtv's reviews at either their youtube page or over on XboxHornet.com

I would like take this opportunity to thank those that have helped and supported me. The list is just way too long to list everyone, but one person stands out and that is Neal, the founder of XboxHornet.com and now lead designer of BBQ Games, whose help has been immeasurable. Thanks Neal.

Well, it's been fun and the only thing that could possibly have made it any better would have been a little support from the right places, but alas this never happened and still doesn't happen for a lot of XBLIG review sites, whose owners put their hearts and souls into their site. I can but hope that one day that people will see the errors of their ways and give these hard working dedicated people the support and respect they deserve.

Well, I suppose that's it. Farewell everyone and don’t forget to check out the BBQ Games site - there might be a surprise or two in store.....

Mark

Avatar Racedrome Review

avatar racedrome

Hey, another racing game. Great. Avatar Racedrome has a lot to offer in the graphics department but unfortunately not much else. This game is a really good concept but still needs a lot of polish in order to compete with some of the other games on the indie market right now. The game itself offers 16 different tracks with 1 – 2 players locally and 2 – 8 players either via system link or xbox live although I must say I did have some trouble getting on to the xbox live tracks. On my first attempt, I got booted from the game and when I got back in I couldn’t get into any of the games at all. Possibly an option to at least watch other racers might be an idea for a future update.

Graphically, this game has got it. Lots of detail in the tracks and the cars and avatars. It is a very nice game to look at.

Soundwise, we have a hit here as well. Nice sounds and nice catchy music.

My problem with the game, however, remains what I mentioned at the start of this post. Twitchy online play coupled with very difficult controls for the cars made this one game that I would really recommend avoiding. My apologies to the developers in this one but I have played racing games where the cars were difficult to control but you had a feeling of weight when you driving. Here you don’t have any feeling other than you are holding a controller in your hands. Overall, this one is getting only 1 thumbs up from me.

Moonshine Review

moonshine

At first glance you might think that Moonshine might be kind of a boring game. But, for those that like to consider the consequences of what they do, this game is a good one. The premise is simple. You buy and sell booze during the prohibition in the 1920’s. Booze is illegal and you have to try and corner the market and earn loads of money by buying and selling the liquor underground. Think you can do it?

The graphics aren’t bad. You have a couple of different screens during the course of each day. Newspapers to read and a kind of stock market of booze to choose what to buy and sell.

The sound here is very good. Classic ‘20’s music that you can change like radio stations.

As I said earlier, don’t overlook this game just because it doesn’t have you running around and shooting things. This one is a thinking man’s game and I challenge you all to see if you can earn any money playing the booze selling game during prohibition.

Overall, a pretty decent outing from QuimbyRBG. Definitely worth a look at by everyone. 4 thumbs up from me.

Aah Little Atlantis released on XBLIG

"Aah Little Atlantis" (ALA) is out now on Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG). It's an Xbox 360 indie game with a retro feel developed by the tiny independent games company Aah Games. The game costs just 80 MS points and appeals to puzzle / strategy fans with empathy for the little people, as it involves rescuing Atlanteans amidst the destruction of their mythical homeland. The sea claims low lying land and rocks rain down from above yet still you must try to rescue them all. Of course, those residents with more wealth and importance clearly deserve to be rescued first. If only everyone wasn't so predictably stupid it might just be that bit easier... (Ab)use their fear of water, boats and rafts to shepherd them safely before the island sinks, leaving just the peaks of mountains where they can take refuge. So what if no-one has thought about what these stranded survivors do next!

ALA was originally created in one weekend for the Ludum Dare 17 competition. Out of 204 entries, it was rated 2nd in the "theme" category, "3rd" in the innovation category, and finished 23rd overall! The Xbox 360 version is a vast improvement from that competition entry, with better graphics, audio, more levels, and an extensive tutorial.
