Carcophony Review

Carcophony

Carcophony. I’m trying to be nice here, but unfortunately that is very hard with this one. Personally, I found the game to be a little boring and only played it for a short period of time. Even my 7 year old son would rather have played a different game and he has been loving the indie games.

The object of the game is relatively simple. You must prevent the traffic from getting backed up by working the streetlights. You move your cursor to each separate section where the traffic is waiting and turn the lights either red or green depending on what you want to do. The cars will find their own way home. Almost kind of like the board game “Sorry”.

The graphics on the game are not all that bad if not a little one dimensional. Think one of those mats for the kids room that has the roadways on it. Images of the cars move along the roadway. The car images are like outlines of the cars flattened along the road.

The music is not really much to write home about either. If you play the game, you would probably want to have some of your own going in the background.

Overall, not a game that I would recommend. Sorry but I don’t believe that it is worth the price that is requested of it. Maybe for the younger generation gamers if they haven’t already been tainted by other more exciting games.

It seems like they wanted a strategy game but I found I could just keep rotating through the loations and rotating them randomly to keep everything moving. Got very repetative.

Adding a point to my earlier comments regarding this game. It would seem that 7 year olds are a fickle bunch. He now loves this game. After watching him play for 45 minutes I have come to realize that there is a little more to the game than one would at first realize. There is a bit of a challenge involved in getting the cars to there homes. The developer has even thrown some ambulances in there to shake things up a bit.

I still say that this is not really a game for the older gamers who will get bored relatively quickly but for kids, it might be just right. You just have to have patience to get them to give it a try the first time. I actually found myself enjoying the game more when my son was playing than when I was playing.

I will adjust my rating from 2 thumbs up to 3 thumbs up for this game but will still say that maybe it was a little overpriced. Possible 240 MS Points would have been better for this one.

I've played this game, and the ambulance turns up within 2 minutes of playing - something the reviewer didn't seem to notice until they updated their comments.

If this review site is happy to post opinion and rate games based upon playing though for less than 2 minutes, then readers ought to be aware.

It would be equivalent of putting your faith in a movie review site that rated films after watching just a snippet of the trailer!

As for the game itself (which I've played for at least an hour), I think the high score tables are set too low. You can easily just rotate junctions randomly (as Jigsaw says) and think you're good. But it only takes 100K to get the local top score - only 20% of the 500K+ scores possible when you really know what you're doing.

I would just like to point out to everyone that the above unsatisfied comment just so happens to come from the same IP address as the Carcophony developers email came from. Hmmmm, now what does that tell us?

Just thought that our readers might like to know that. Draw your own conclusions from it.

I have been tainted by more exciting games!!!

Like ... uh ... Kissy Poo or whatever it is. Yeah. That's it.

Ok, I'll admit to having never played Carcophony, and I only played a early version of Kissy Poo on Windows for about 20 minutes before it scared the hell out of me.

Really creepy fuckin' game.

lol. I'm thinking of doing a review of Kissy Poo. My 1 year old seems to like it.

As far as the original review goes. I play for a bit (longer than 2 minutes), then do my internet research to see if anyone else has tried it (doesn't taint my review) and then write my review. I do also let my 7 year old try the games and take what he says into account. Why not hit up the intended audience, right?

Of course, at first my son didn't like it. Then he did. Now he doesn't again. Go figure.

Hi Kelly/Mark,

We would just like to clarify that the comments from BillyN are personal comments and do not represent the views of glpeas.

Our communications with Kelly have up to this point been nothing but cordial. We truly appreciate that you guys took the time to review our hard work at all, and it's your website, so you have every right to say exactly what you feel about the result.

Apologies from glpeas :( This is our first outing into the world of Indie games, so we still all have much to learn. Please don't think too badly of us.

Expect a personal apology from BillyN in the very near future...

Thank you,
glpeas

To glpeas:

I take no offense at the comments posted whatsoever. Unfortunately, not everyone will like the review you give. This wouldn't be the first one I've received and I don't take it personally. I do understand the time and effort it took to create the game but sometimes it just doesn't turn out to be everyone's cup of tea.

I look forward to seeing future games coming from you guys.

To glpeas:

Hey, no problem. Unfortunately, you need to have a thick skin when it comes to games development or really any form of entertainment as everyone has their own opinion of your creation and not all of them are positive.

I've written a couple of games myself and have had both great and absolutely terrible feedback, so I can understand that negative feedback is demoralizing, but you have to get used to it or just never read the reviews.

Good luck with your future projects. I may see you around the Creators Club.....

I think this is a unique idea with great potential. Every puzzle game fan has a compulsion to organize and this game's structure taps into that fairly well and in a fresh way. The only criticism I have is that the game lacks context and doesn't reward the player in a meaningful way. There is no overall city, or between stage progress report. There is no graph or tally or graphic indicating your efforts. An overall story, or image of a city getting larger of better would've helped the player stay interested. A game this much about organizational tedium and quick thinking would be exponentially improved by a good story and a greater, building sense of accomplishment. I am impressed at the addition of multiplayer, and I'm very much addicted to this fun game. Keep it up!
